Central Alberta is a beautiful region with plenty of well-established trails that are perfect for destination touring. Rest stops and amenities are never far and several communities in Alberta Central permit the use of a snowmobile within town boundaries. Located within Central Alberta is Whitecourt—the snowmobile capital of the province. This area is home to the Golden Triangle, which links the communities of Swan Hills and Fox Creek. Whitecourt, however, provides only a taste of what Alberta Central has to offer. Plan to make several trips to this region.

Athabasca
Head to Athabasca, the town so accommodating that you can ride your sled right to the gas station. Athabasca is located approximately 150 kilometres north of Edmonton and is home to an active snowmobile club, the Athabasca River Runners. The club grooms more than 350 kilometres of trails, including a portion of the Trans-Canada Snowmobile Trail from Athabasca to Swan Hills. The club has also obtained designated routes in town that allow sledders easy access to all services.
Barrhead
For those seeking sledding thrills in Alberta, the Barrhead area is a must. The Barrhead terrain is exciting and diverse, and there are convenient staging areas located right in town.
Bonnyville
A sledding trip to Bonnyville is time well spent. With more than 200 kilometres of signed trails (groomed by the Bonnyville Snowdusters club), this is one of the most beautiful snowmobiling destinations in the area. The Lakeland region surrounding Bonnyville brings premium terrain with fabulous lakes surrounded by lush forest.
Cold Lake
The Cold Lake Snowmobile Club maintains trails that take riders through varied scenery, ranging from dense forest areas to riverbanks, meadows and cutlines. Connecting to other well-known destinations such as the Iron Horse Trail, the Cold Lake territory has unlimited potential for sledders to explore.
Crowsnest Pass
For seven consecutive years, SnoRiders West has held its annual Rider’s Choice Awards and this year’s platinum award went to the Crowsnest Pass, AB as the most popular area in the West for snowmobiling.
Fort McMurray
If you dream of sledding under the stars with the Northern Lights overhead in the clear night sky, look no further than Fort McMurray. For sledders, this area is one of Alberta's best kept secrets. Here you can find exquisite trails running through varied and extensive trail systems maintained by the local club, the McMurray Sno-Drifters. High Level
With entrancing boreal forests and fields, High Level presents ample opportunities for sledding. Experience 350 kilometres of groomed trails when you visit this gateway to the Northwest Territories; the terrain in High Level will take you on a snowmobiling adventure you will never forget, with sunny skies during the day and the Northern Lights at night.
Iron Horse Trail
The Iron Horse Trail is a 300-kilometre traversal of Alberta, which passes through more than 18 communities along the way. Its point of origin is at Abilene Junction, where three branches of the trail spread southeastwards to the tiny hamlet of Heinsburg, west to Smoky Lake and northeast to Cold Lake. Its twists and turns take riders through some of the prettiest and most varied terrain Alberta has to offer.
La Crete
This friendly community puts sledders first, and it's no wonder that La Crete is known for its extensively groomed trails (running for more than 290 kilometres) and prime conditions. The La Crete Polar Cats maintain this gorgeous area, ensuring that the terrain is in great shape and ready to be explored.
Mighty Peace
In Mighty Peace country you can’t help but be enamoured with the sledding possibilities. Incorporating some of the most renowned snowmobiling communities, and terrain to please any snowmobile enthusiast, this region is ranked highly by novices and professionals alike.
Rocky Mountain House
One of the most notable things that makes the area around Rocky Mountain House so popular is its wilderness scenery, with stunning alpine lakes and peaks. Moreover, it has an abundance of trails and is close to Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton. The trails can be enjoyed whether you are a novice or an expert rider.
St. Paul
Situated along the Iron Horse Trail, the charming town of St. Paul is surrounded by large boreal forests, wetlands and open rolling rangeland. Along with the 330 kilometres of Iron Horse Trail that runs through St. Paul, there are other popular trails here including the Bellevue Ferry Trail that travels south from St. Paul 50 kilometres to the North Saskatchewan River, then joins the Two Hills Snowmobile Trail. The St. Paul Trailblazers stay busy during the sledding season, especially from December to March, not only grooming the trails, but organizing events and rides.
Swan Hills
Located in the heart of the Golden Triangle, Swan Hills offers kilometres of marked, groomed trails, as well as the countless unmarked trails in Virginia Hills, Goose Mountain and Deer Mountain. This combination offers a ton of opportunities for both the skilled and novice rider. These areas are complete with staging areas.
Westlock
Located 85 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, Westlock is a small town with a large appreciation for snowmobiling adventure. Home of the Pembina Drift Busters snowmobile club, Westlock offers sledders panoramic scenery and over 150 kilometres of groomed trails from which to enjoy it. Primarily agricultural, the area surrounding Westlock provides riders with opportunities for ditchbanging, open-throttle charges across vast fields, and slower treks through wooded trails.
Whitecourt
With hundreds of kilometres of well-groomed trails that cover a variety of terrain, it is no wonder Whitecourt is known as the snowmobile capital of Alberta.
