Sledders raise funds for Hospice

The day that the Smithers Snowmobile Association lost one of its members, Judy Vangrootheest, to cancer was one of great impact for the club. During part of Vangrootheest’s battle with cancer, she stayed at the Bulkley Valley Hospice Society, a non-profit organization that supports patients.

John Emmerson, the president of the Smithers Snowmobile Association, said the third annual Judy Vangrootheest Charity Poker Ride for Hospice, held March 15, was a great success and the club raised over $5,000.

“This particular charity is quite close to us as she was one of our own,” said Emmerson. “Not only did we break a record for funding raised but we were able to give everyone a prize.”

    As most snowmobiling occurs in high elevation areas, there is the potential for snowmobiling to disturb and displace these animals from their preferred habitat into areas less suitable and more prone to avalanches. Mountain caribou may also become stressed, which can affect energy reserves during critical time periods. In addition, snowmobile trails can provide easier access for predators into areas occupied by mountain caribou. Please take caution and be aware of, and avoid, mountain caribou in your riding area.
