In Valemount the winters are long and the snow is abundant. It comes as no surprise, then, that the community has become known for its superb alpine sledding.
Curtis Pawliuk, the general manager of Valemount Area Recreational Development Association (VARDA), said this year the Association of British Columbia Snowmobile Clubs (ABCSC)—in co-operation with Tourism Valemount, VARDA and the Valemount Timberline Snowgoers—hosted the second annual BC Lions Society Winterfest charity poker run to raise money for children with disabilities. The ride was held on January 30.
“We may not be wealthy enough to make the contributions that we would all like to make,” said Pawliuk, “but volunteering and participating in something like this gives you a good feeling.”
This year, the ride took place in the Lower West Ridge—a sledding area that is ideal for families. Pawliuk said the number of participants in 2009 doubled and he hopes to see an increase in years to come.
“We are hoping to get more and more (participants) every year,” said Pawliuk. “We are still raising well over $1,000 for charity. The highest amount raised last year was $1,600, so we aren’t that far off. With Valemount being so small, the club activity is not as (much) as it would be in a bigger city…but we do our best with what we can.”

How Does Snowmobiling Affect Caribou?
As most snowmobiling occurs in high elevation areas, there is the potential for snowmobiling to disturb and displace these animals from their preferred habitat into areas less suitable and more prone to avalanches. Mountain caribou may also become stressed, which can affect energy reserves during critical time periods. In addition, snowmobile trails can provide easier access for predators into areas occupied by mountain caribou. Please take caution and be aware of, and avoid, mountain caribou in your riding area.
