SNOWMOBILING IN Athabasca Welcome to friendly Athabasca
Athabasca is very snowmobiler friendly. In fact, you can ride your sled right to the gas station in this accommodating town. Athabasca is located approximately 150 kilometres north of Edmonton and is home to an active snowmobile club of 120 members. The Athabasca River Runners Club has recently purchased a groomer and now grooms 300 kilometres of trails including a portion of the Trans-Canada Snowmobile Trail from Athabasca to Swan Hills. There are 120-150 miles of trails currently under development.
This trail ties into the Golden Triangle trail system that leads to Whitecourt and Edson. There are sledding services in Athabasca that include top-notch accommodation, several gas stations and a Polaris snowmobile dealership. The local club has obtained designated routes in town that allow sledders easy access to all services.
The club hosts an annual Winterfest on Family Day which will be the long weekend February. Planned activities include a 225 kilometre groomed trail and river run on the first day of the holiday. There will be a fun ride to be led by club members. All of the trails to be used are picturesque with varied terrain inhabited by a lot of wild land critters.
Other popular riding trails are Grand Rapids, Athabasca River to Smith, the Pine Sands natural area and the Peace River Trail.
The clubhouse and a staging area are three kilometres west of Athabasca on Highway 2. Currently, there is one warm-up shelter on the Swan Hills Trail run but other shelters are in the process of being developed. Trail development is progressing Athabasca to Grassland. Maps are available at select local business, the clubhouse and at the local Polaris dealer.
On behalf of the Athabasca River Runners, everyone is invited to come ride Athabasca. Club contacts are Dave Bilsky at 780-675-2944 and Sheldon Jardine at 780-689-7158.
