It has long been known that the Crowsnest Pass is an awesome destination for sledders. Over the years, it has received a great deal of recognition for having an extensivetrail system and fantastic mountain riding. It is also known for its frequent snowfalls and small crowds, which makes the area a perfect place to practise your moves in untracked powder.
There are well over 1,200 kilometres of trails that are great for an afternoon with the kids or a day out with the boys—or girls.
"We have lots of good riding. It varies from family trail riding to extreme hillclimbing," said Vern Pedersen, president of the Crow Snow Riders snowmobile club.
Popular places
On the south side of Crowsnest Pass, Carbondale, the Castle region, Linx Creek and York Creek are some of the names that strike a familiar chord with snowmobilers in the area. Here, beginners can test their skills on well-groomed trails or experienced riders can push their limits in the snow-covered basins.
"A good portion of our grooming is in the south, so it's probably the better side to ride," said Pedersen.
Most of these areas can be accessed right off Highway 3, which means the staging areas are relatively close to wherever you are staying in the community, according to Pedersen.
Other excellent riding opportunities can be found in the northern region of the Pass.
Multi-use trails
Every year, members of the Crow Snow Riders work very hard grooming the trails, erecting signs and maintaining two warm-up shelters located about 12 to 14 kilometres from town. And, during the summer months, members of the Crowsnest Pass Quad Squad take over to assist in building bridges, clearing debris and keeping the trails in tip-top shape.
More than just great sledding
The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass is a snowmobile-friendly community that caters to visitors during the sledding season. With numerous services and amenities available, Crowsnest Pass is a great destination for family vacations, esspecially with the other winter activities that can be accessed in the area, such as curling, ice skating, and both cross-country and downhill skiing. |
