One of the most notable things that makes the area around Rocky Mountain House and Nordegg so popular is its wilderness scenery. Moreover, it has an abundance of trails and is close to Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton.
“It is so close to what I call the multi-triangle, which includes Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer,” said Wesley Eror, a snowmobile enthusiast in Nordegg. “You are only a two-hour drive from Calgary and Edmonton—then you’re only about an hour away from Red Deer.”
The trails are endless here, and can be enjoyed whether you are a novice or an expert rider. The scenery is a big part of the experience, with the surrounding stunning alpine lakes and peaks.
One trail that is a favourite among locals is the Chambers Creek Snowmobile Trail. This scenic route is an 86-kilometre path located 30 kilometres west of Rocky Mountain House on Highway 11. It provides some great spots for excellent views of the mountains.
“When you come snowmobiling out here, you have plenty of opportunities for mountain riding or you can enjoy exploring the many forestry trails,” said Eror.
Nordegg is quickly becoming recognized as one of the most desirable locations for a vacation—in winter or summer.
Its wide range of recreational opportunities and unspoiled mountain vistas, combined with the comforts and services available in town, provide for a memorable experience.
According to Eror, Nordegg has the scenery and the terrain—all you have to do is provide the sled. With countless trails and paths available to you here, you’ll want to explore the farthest reaches of the wilderness.
While in the region, be sure to include a trip to the Bighorn Wild land Provincial Recreation Area, a popular getaway for riders. From here, snowmobile enthusiasts can escape into the back country, where some fantastic mountain riding can be had.
One remarkable area is around Abraham Lake, where Mount Michener overlooks the entire region. Any level of sledder will find terrain here to make them smile.
