With trails as far as the eye can see and virgin snow waiting to be torn to shreds, Mackenzie, B.C., is a hot spot for snowmobilers who are looking to have the time of their lives.

Carved out of the wilderness, this small and vibrant community is extremely snowmobile friendly and offers riding opportunities right from its back door.

“The town really does cater to snowmobilers,” said Lawrence Napier, vice-president of the Rocky Mountain Riders Snowmobile Club. “There are places set aside within our town’s boundaries where you can start out on your ride. Our club tries hard to provide a strong voice for snowmobilers in our area and is always working with the town to create more opportunities for snowmobilers.”

Snow galore
One of the things that sets Mackenzie apartfrom other snowmobiling destinations is the large amount of fresh snow the area receives. Snowmobilers aresometimes able to ride as late into the season as mid-May and never havetoworry about crowded trails.

“There is lots of room on our hills and it seems like you are always able to find virgin snow,” said Napier. “The riding areas are quite big and very diverse—some are quite open. There are lots of logging roads, alpine meadows and alpine lakes, as well as mountainous areas with great views.”

Cool places
A top destination snowmobilers should be sure to check out if they’re in the Mackenzie area is Morfee Mountain—which is a great spot for alpine bowl riding that offers an awesome view of the entire town on a sunny day. The Rocky Mountain Riders Snowmobile Club maintains two easily accessible cabins at Morfee Mountain, which has miles of terrain for both intermediate and expert riders.

Powder King Mountain Resort will put extreme riders to the test with steep inclines, powder bowls and serious alpine. Staying true to its name, this area has the deep, soft snow that serious snowmobilers crave.

There are plenty of trail riding opportunities and scenic loops around Mackenzie that areperfect for family trips or beginner riders.

Take your rod
Anybody who wants to mix up their snowmobiling adventure with a fishing expedition has plenty of opportunity. There are several lakes in close proximity that snowmobilers often visit specifically for the fish.

“There are so many activities and things snowmobilers can do up here that they are just too numerous to mention,” said Napier, “and there are a number of annual events that occur throughout the winter such as our poker run and snow drags. Snowmobiling in Mackenzie is only becoming better with time.”
