Living up to the legend
Mackenzie proves that it has the white stuff to draw snowmobilers
by TANYA LAING MOORE

THE HIGH LIFE: Up above the treeline, sledding enthusiasts in Mackenzie find that the opportunities for carving, trailblazing and heart-pounding, open-throttle fun are matched only by the spectacular scenery.
Mackenzie is getting used to being the centre of attention, especially as its reputation for being one of the premier snowmobiling destinations in B.C. continues to grow. Clint Desrosiers, owner of Rocky Mountain Trench Adventures in Mackenzie, has this advice for those planning a visit: believe the hype.

Mackenzie loves sledders
With powder-plunging possibilities, gorgeous scenery and wildlife viewing along its many groomed trails, Mackenzie is seeing an increase in its snowmobiling tourism, and is attracting the notice of snow-lovers and adventure television show producers. Desrosiers said the reason for the attention is obvious.

“You can literally ride right from the community to our groomed Morfee Mountain trail,” he said. “The Mackenzie community and Rocky Mountain Riders snowmobile club have been very progressive in developing a new groomed trail infrastructure within the community. (They are) also partnered in developing a new groomed trail system that will allow visitors to ride right from the town of Mackenzie to our second most famous riding area in the Pine Pass—the famous Powder King riding area.”

The community recently submitted an application to the Province to expand the trail system within the town as well as to all the local mountains. The increased access to superlative snowmobiling will be just one more reason to enjoy Mackenzie’s “Porch to Powder” sledding.

Splendid spring snowmobiling
The sledding in spring is fantastic, according to Desrosiers. This year’s heavy snow accumulation makes it even better. With a thick base of snow, opportunities abound for tearing it up along trails or carving new ones through the famous pristine champagne powder at the higher elevations.

Sledding enthusiast and SnoRiders/RidersWest advertising consultant Cora Tschetters had the chance to visit Mackenzie last year and take in some of the best spring sledding in the province.

“It’s just breathtaking,” said Tschetters, “mountains and mountains of snow.”
With more snow this season than any other, there’s just one question you should ask yourself: what are you waiting for?
