GREAT RIDES: Mica Mountain (Top) near 100 Mile House is a popular place to sled; the terrain in the South Cariboo is made up of plateau lands, forested rolling hills and rugged mountains.
|
With hundreds of miles of trails and spectacular wilderness scenery, the South Cariboo region provides sledders with hour upon hour of adventure.
From Clinton, Lac La Hache and Lac des Roches to the Interlakes area and the Fraser River, the South Cariboo is a vast region in B.C.'s interior. The region's mix of plateau lands, forested rolling hills and rugged Cariboo Mountains is great for families and adventurous mountain climbers. The trails criss-cross throughout the area and are maintained by diligent volunteers from the various snowmobile clubs. There are no fees for using the trails but the support from club membership and donations is greatly appreciated.
70 Mile House, Green Lake/Watch Lake, Bridge Lake, Sheridan Lake, Deka Lake, 100 Mile House, Canim, Mahood and the Timothy Lakes area all have fueling stops, restaurants and accommodations. There are various sled and ATV dealers in 100 Mile House that provide excellent service.
Choose a trail
For a multi-day trip from 70 Mile House to Wells and Barkerville, the Gold Rush Trail is an excellent choice. However, it is a good idea to speak with club members before embarking on a multi-day ride. Many of the resorts that rent rooms or cabins have fuel so it is wise to ask if that service is available for snowmobilers.

The Interlakes Snowmobile Club has developed one of the most concentrated areas for well-signed and maintained trails in the area. Each year, the club hosts the BC Lions Snow-a-rama and this event is a great opportunity for visitors to join in and discover the trails.
With a wide variety of accommodations—from bed and breakfasts and suites to lakeside cabins and vacation homes—sledders have no problem finding a place to stay in the Interlakes area.
Getting there: There is a staging area located on the West Sheridan Lake Road near Sheridan Lake.

The 100 Mile House Snowmobile Club hosts two big events in February: The Great Outhouse Caper—a parade of floats pulled by either sleds or ATVs that comprise a toilet in the design—and the Snow Drags. The drags take place at the 99 Mile Clubhouse just south of town. The clubhouse is also a great staging area for sledders to access trails heading north or south.
Getting there: To reach the 99 Mile Clubhouse, take the 99 Mile Road, west of Highway 97, go past the Nordic Clubhouse and keep climbing until you see an oval track.

The Green Lake Snowmobile Club has been around for many years and it hosts many community events for members and others. Sometimes referred to as the sno-pokes, this group of sledders are avid daytime riders that explore the area while taking in one of the local restaurants for a lunch ride.
Getting there: The clubhouse and staging area are on the South Green Lake Road. Another staging area is situated just off Highway 97 to the west at 70 Mile House.

The Mica Mountain Snowmobile Club can provide snowmobilers with information on some of the more adventurous backcountry riding. The dealers in 100 Mile House are by far your best connection for details on the riding that takes place out to the east. Canim Lake offers a variety of accommodations and fuel services. There are no restaurants in this area but the resorts will provide meals upon request.
