Famous for its relaxing outdoor hot springs pools, Radium Hot Springs is a snowmobiling heaven that caters to tourists and offers some of the most rugged and beautiful backcountry found in the Kootenays.
“We have all kinds of terrain,” said Dave Strong, president of the Windermere Valley Snowmobile Society, “everything from beginner trails to trails that are not for the faint of heart.”
There are six main snowmobiling destinations around Radium Hot Springs that are easy to access and well worth the visit.
Forster Creek
This is the most popular snowmobiling spot here. From two staging areas you can access more than 32 kilometres of groomed trails. Forster Creek is rated at a beginner to expert level and has a well-maintained day-use cabin. Elevations in this area reach up to 8,000 feet and there are two lakes near by that are accessible to the more advanced rider.
Paradise
With groomed trails, steep bowls and scenic meadows, Paradise is a slightly more challenging location that has amazing views overlooking Panorama Mountain Resort.
Rocky Point/ Kain Creek
This place is well known for its steep inclines and tough trails that tend to draw in expert snowmobilers.
“You wouldn’t want to try this area by yourself,” said Strong. “You should definitely go with someone who is familiar with the terrain.”
Horsethief Creek
This is an ungroomed logging road with small play areas and perhaps the best scenery in the valley.
“It is a really nice place to ride on a sunny day,” said Strong.
Brewer Creek/Doctor Creek
The last two main destinations for snowmobiling are Brewer Creek—located off Hawke Road, and Doctor Creek—situated approximately 25 kilometres up Findlay Creek Road.
“Both these locations are occasionally groomed by the local guys and are pretty easy to ride,” said Strong.
