Few places embrace the winter season as passionately as the friendly town of Smithers, B.C. With miles upon miles of untracked wilderness and groomed trails stretching over a variety of terrain, it is no wonder this European alpine-style community has earned itself the reputation of being a very snowmobiler-friendly and fun destination for riders of all ages and skill levels.
“You’ll see lots of riders out on any given weekend and they are absolutely friendly,” said Frank Parker, a 79-year-old Smithers resident and avid snowmobiler. “The scenery is beautiful and there are a lot of accessible areas within a short distance.”
Blessed with the best
With a riding season that starts around the beginning of November and continues on through April, Smithers is able to offer riders plenty of wicked trails in a number of different locations. Often blessed with sunny skies and good weather, the region has a wonderful sledding atmosphereenhanced by the friendly locals who go out of their way to accommodate and welcome visitors.
“The Smithers Snowmobile Association maintains a number of cabins that are free to snowmobilers (although donations are appreciated) and can be easily reached by all levels of riders,” said Parker. “If you swing by any of our motorsports dealerships in the town they areusually happy to help you out and point you to the best rides in the area. The community and the businesses go out of their way to cater to visitors.”
Divine destinations
Surrounded by sky-scraping mountains, Smithers’ most popular trails include The Big Onion—situated north of Smithers in Babine Mountain Provincial Park; The Dome—located east of Smithers; and The Microwave—which is approximately half an hour south of nearby Telkwa.
Some of the top snowmobiling events in Smithers include the hillclimb competition at Slide Hill on The Big Onion and the Snowarama fundraising event, which is a joint effort between the Smithers Lions Club and the Smithers Snowmobile Association to raise money for children with disabilities. These events take place in February or March, depending on snow conditions and weather.
