The Pas, Manitoba
Northern trails
Expect good snow—and lots of it
by MICHELLE DOBROVOLNY

RIDE INTO THE SUNSET: Snowmobiling in the pristine Canadian Shield can be a very zen experience.

Perfect snow for a fantastic day of sledding is never hard to find around The Pas.

“We always have snow up here,” said local snowmobiler Kathy Sangster. “We almost never have those meltdowns. It’s consistently good snowmobiling.”

Sledders will also have a lot to choose from, as the trail system around The Pas boasts over 400 kilometres of groomed riding. These trails also connect with the trails of Flin Flon to the north and Swan River to the south, making the riding possibilities virtually limitless.

You might think that the cold of northern Manitoba would pose a deterrent to sledders. In fact, the main snowmobile route north of The Pas leads to Clearwater Lake—a pristine provincial park of coniferous forest where dense shrub insulates the trails. The cold is rarely ever a concern.

“Our trails are mostly in the bush, so they’re always nicely protected,” said Sangster.
