A town is characterized by the people who live there, and Hudson Bay is a snowmobiler’s haven. The area boasts 600 kilometres of groomed trails and the people of Hudson Bay are welcoming and warm to anyone riding a sled.
“The hospitality mat in the whole community is open to all snowmobilers,” said Rick Dolezsar, trail committee chairman with the Hudson Bay Trail Riders snowmobile club.
Park your vehicle
Don’t be surprised if your vehicle goes unused in Hudson Bay. From the moment you arrive at your motel, the need for any sort of transportation other than a snowmobile is non-existent. The town recognizes all properly licensed snowmobiles as a means of travel within the town limits.
“Once you unload at the motel, you can ride from your motel door for all conveniences—fuel, groceries, refreshments,” said Dolezsar. “And you don’t have to load up and take it to a trailhead: trailheads are right at the motels.”
Watch for wildlife
Along with its seemingly endless stretches of trail, Hudson Bay is home to a variety of wildlife, so don’t forget your camera when sledding. According to Dolezsar, you are almost guaranteed to see animals every time you ride. From deer, elk, caribou, coyotes, foxes and wolves to the most common of the town’s wild inhabitants—the moose, wildlife is abundant in the region. There are so many moose, in fact, that Hudson Bay has been given the name Moose Capital of the World.
A favourite among visitors
As well as being popular for its wildlife and hospitality, Hudson Bay has been voted the top groomed trails destination in Saskatchewan several times.
“We are in the centre of four million acres of provincial forest,” said Dolezsar. “We have a number of loop trails and we’re on the Trans Canada Trail. We’ve got full-service facilities for visitors; we’re family-oriented and have five warm-up cabins in the system. You’re guaranteed a very pleasant and positive experience.”
