YORKTON, SASKATCHEWAN
Ready for an adventure?
A wealth of sledding trails await in this extraordinary community
by KIRSTEN ARMLEDER
For some in Saskatchewan, snowmobiling is just one of the many winter activities enjoyed on the weekends, but for many residents of Yorkton, it is an essential part of life. The community's friendly atmosphere and prime location are part of why Yorkton is considered one of the province's premier sledding destinations.
Set your spirit free
According to Darrell Mirva, president of the Yorkton Sno-Riders Club, one of the best areas to ride is Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park. More than 18 kilometres of groomed trails wind through the park's pristine landscape and scenic aspen forests. Smooth terrain and perfect snow conditions make the park a terrific place to spend a day in the company of friends and family.
There are many other great spots to sled near by, as Yorkton is home to over 600 kilometres of trails; Mirva's favourite route is one that travels from Yorkton to the north end of Good Spirit Lake.
"The trip gives a good mix of riding—from straight-line wide-open trails to winding forest trails and deep-snow cross-country riding," said Mirva.
If you decide to take this trail, don't forget your camera—there are wonderful opportunities for wildlife viewing along the way.
"Almost every time you go out, you will see some wildlife, including deer, moose, coyotes, rabbits and a mix of different birds," said Mirva.
A model sledding community
Yorkton is an exceptionally friendly sledding community, as the city council has permitted the snowmobile club to establish a marked and maintained trail system that runs directly into town. This means sledders can simply walk out the front door, hop on their sled and be off in minutes.
"You can snowmobile directly from your motel and ride over 600 kilometres of the finest groomed and maintained trails in Western Canada," said Mirva. "The city of Yorkton and the local sledders are the friendliest you will find anywhere."
