Snowmobiling in Dawson City, Yukon
Destination Dawson
Home of the Trek Over The Top snowmobile ride, the area offers some unforgettable backcountry sledding
LINE 'EM UP: “The sport of snowmobiling is slowly growing, but a lot of people just use them for transportation or for work,” said Zalitis.
In most places, snowmobiles are typically used for recreation, but here in Dawson City and in surrounding areas they are used for transportation as well.
At the heart of Canada's Klondike gold country, Dawson City attracts numerous visitors each year, some of them being avid sledders.
According to Eric Zalitis, organizer of Trek Over The Top snowmobile ride and a resident of Dawson City, it is a great place to go sledding because you can leave from your backyard and have access to miles of mining and forestry roads throughout the area.
The Trek Over The Top snowmobile ride is what attracts the majority of sledders to the area.
“The sport of snowmobiling is slowly growing, but a lot of people just use them for transportation or for work, such as cutting wood,” said Zalitis.
The local club, the Dawson Sled Dawgs, do a lot to make the sledding season a good one. According to Zalitis, they run the Trek Over The Top and try to have a few family events during to season as well. Recently, they have been doing some trail work to improve existing trails, the majority of which are ungroomed.
Some great riding areas include the Dawson Goldfields, Top of the World Highway and the Dempster Highway, according to Zalitis.
So if you're looking for scenic backcountry sledding, Dawson City is the place to go.
