Snowmobiling in Whitehorse, Y.K.
Snowmobiling in the Yukon is definitely a breathtaking experience. The experience is amazing as you ride through the vast areas of wilderness and pristine northern scenery. You can ride all day and never see another rider or cross another rider's tracks if you so desire. The late spring riding on marked and groomed trails which are being further developed every year is great.

A historic route
According to Whitehorse resident and avid snowmobiler Jim Connor, the Dawson Overland Trail has great scenery and mostly easy riding, though there can be a couple of rough creek crossings at times. The trail starts at Takhini Hot Springs and ends up at Braeburn Lodge.

Trek Over the Top
Trek Over the Top is a multi-day sledding event that has been taking place in the Yukon and Alaska for 14 consecutive years. The groomed route follows the Taylor Highway in Alaska and the Top of the World Highway in the Yukon.

"The first day we travel 320 kilometres, arriving in Dawson City later in the afternoon," said Eric Zalitis, who has been involved with the event since its birth. "We average 200 people per run, the majority being from Alaska. Last year we had 14 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces represented."

When the participants arrive in Dawson City, they can take part in a number of activities that are included in the participant's package. The package also includes accommodations in Dawson City, fuel at the halfway point, the majority of meals, and live entertainment held at Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall. While in Dawson City, snowmobilers have the option of going on a snowmobile tour and taking curling lessons.

The trail, even though it is groomed, has a few areas where caution must be used due to the higher elevations and blowing snow. Cold temperatures have been experienced in past years, so warm clothing is a necessity.

"The past few years, the weather has been getting warmer," said Zalitis. "We recommend that you should have experience for the ride, but we find that a number of first-timers do the trip and all have been successful."
