Canada's longest snowmobile race An epic journey through the remote wilderness of Labrador
“The roster is made up of local riders as well as those from other provinces,” said Mayo. “We also have teams from the U.S. competing.” Hundreds of spectators gather at the start and finish lines and even more follow the race online. “You can really feel the adrenalin at the start line,” she said. “It is amazing to watch.” This year, Cain’s Quest begins March 9, 2008, at 11 a.m. Racers will depart from Labrador City and ride to Goose Bay and back again. It takes four or five days to complete; last year, only half of the teams entered were able to finish. “There is some lake travel and deep snow and the weather is completely unpredictable,” said Mayo. “It is a true test of endurance.” After the race, there is an awards banquet in Labrador City and winners will receive approximately $50,000 in prize money—which is determined by the number of teams entered. However, that is only part of the reason why sledders accept the Cain's Quest challenge. “The racers also get bragging rights that come along with the big win,” said Mayo. “It really is an incredible feat to even finish.” “It’s about strategy, skill, guts and luck,” she added. “I expect 2008 will be the most exciting race yet.” For info, go to www.cainsquest.com. |
