Each year, the largest snowmobile club in Alberta hosts a huge poker rally. The Whitecourt Trailblazers’ annual poker rally will be held February 16 to 17, with pre-registration and a social on Friday, and riding on Saturday and Sunday.

“Last year’s poker rally attracted almost 900 sledders in the two days of riding,” said Ken Linford, president of the Whitecourt Trailblazers.

Snowmobilers can ride on either or both of the sledding days; Saturday’s ride will be 100 kilometres and Sunday’s will travel a different trail of 80 kilometres. There are checkpoints situated along the trails that offer food and beverages.

“Trails wind directly from town through the groomed trail system, stopping at the Eagle River staging area, Athabasca log cabin and the new cabin at Virginia Hills,” said Linford.

The rally is a family event, not a race. There are prizes up for grabs, the most exciting of which is a 2008 Yamaha Nytro MTX.

“This may be the biggest rally in Western Canada and definitely attracts sledders from all over to the official snowmobile capital of Alberta (Whitecourt),” said Linford.
