EVENT AT A GLANCE

What started as a small group of sledders who journeyed over the Top of the World Highway 14 years ago has turned into the Yukon’s premier snowmobiling event: Trek Over the Top.

A 320-kilometre run and poker ride, the event attracts snowmobile enthusiasts from all across Canada and the U.S. Over the years, some have come from as far away as New York, Florida, California and Washington. Trek Over the Top has become so popular that organizers have added more dates, with the potential for 230 riders on each run.

Starting in Tok, Alaska, the route follows the Taylor Highway in Alaska and the Top of the World Highway in the Yukon, both of which are closed to vehicles for the winter. The trail, although it is groomed, can be challenging due to extreme weather conditions and since Trek Over the Top crosses international borders, snowmobilers must be at least 19 years old to participate.

Arriving in Dawson City, riders are treated to excellent food, fun and warm hospitality. Snowmobile tours to the Midnight Dome and curling at the Dawson City Museum are among the activities open to participants during their stay.

“A good number of participants come back each year and they have made friends here in town,” said Eric Zalitis, the organizer for the Canadian side. “We put a package together, including meals, live entertainment and events. Riders have a choice if they want to do extra riding or just relax.”
