Western Canadian snow shows

Sledding enthusiasts are already revving up to attend these events in B.C. and Alberta

The snow may be melting, but our snowmobilers are already thinking about next year’s sledding season. Coming up this autumn are three annual shows in B.C. and Alberta that will bring in people from all over Canada.

Head to beautiful British Columbia

Scheduled for October 17 and 18, 2009, the second annual BCSF snowmobile and ATV show is to take place at the Wesbild Centre in Vernon, B.C.

“We are very excited after the first show last year,” said Stephen Harnum of Exhibit Installation Services. “We had 5,000 people last year and great momentum for this year’s show. We have moved to the Wesbild Centre from the Priest Valley complex.”

This year’s show will feature four manufacturer displays: Polaris, BRP, Yamaha and Arctic Cat, as well as BCSF program displays that include exhibits on avalanche safety and youth education. There will also be great prizes for all ages. Admission to the show is $5, and children six years and under can attend for free.

Excitement in Alberta

Two ASA snowmobile shows will be held in Alberta this year, one in Edmonton and another on a smaller scale in Calgary. The Edmonton show will be at the Northlands Agricom (Halls A & B) from October 23 to 25, and the Calgary show will take place at the BMO Centre in Hall D on November 14 and 15. Since the ASA began hosting this event in 1984, it has steadily gained popularity.

Both shows will feature similar events, such as the skills competition.

“(It involves) placing journeyman technicians in a timed event to reassemble an entire snowmobile in working order,” said Harnum, “with prizes awarded to the top three teams.”

There are many other sights to see. Visitors can check out the latest 2010 technology, with sleds and ATVs made by top manufacturers such as Polaris, BRP, Yamaha and Arctic Cat. Also featured will be accessories, gear and exhibits that educate sledders on everything from trail riding areas to avalanche safety.

“I have been managing the snowmobile show for 17 years,” said Harnum. “When I attended the show, the destination areas and the antique display were and still are my favourite features.”

As if the fun and excitement weren’t enough reason to take part in the ASA shows, they also act as a fundraiser for the ASA to keep up the good work creating and maintaining safe trails throughout the province.

  • How Does Snowmobiling Affect Caribou?

As most snowmobiling occurs in high elevation areas, there is the potential for snowmobiling to disturb and displace these animals from their preferred habitat into areas less suitable and more prone to avalanches. Mountain caribou may also become stressed, which can affect energy reserves during critical time periods. In addition, snowmobile trails can provide easier access for predators into areas occupied by mountain caribou. Please take caution and be aware of, and avoid, mountain caribou in your riding area.
