Lots of snow in Lakeland
The Lakeland Snowmobile Club has enjoyed a season of plentiful powder
by MARG CLAIR

What a winter! Here in Lakeland, between Prince Albert and Waskesiu, our winter started November 18th when we got our first foot of snow, and that was only the beginning. It has snowed almost every day for an extended period of time till we now have lots. Because of the early snow before the lakes froze well, it is a challenging year for grooming. There is concern about the quality and consistent depth of the ice. A little thin ice doesn't dampen the enthusiasm for sledding, though. There are lots of great trails and the snow has been the best for a lot of years.

Our trail system is made up of about 400 kilometres of trails through both mature spruce forests and more open marshland. The trail to Prince Albert runs along Highway 2. Most of the trails are made so a loop ride is possible. Each of the trails has at least one shelter with an airtight heater and solar power. Our club volunteers do a great job of keeping them clean and stocked with dry wood. Before this winter ends, there are plans for two more shelters, one north and one east, which will bring the total number to seven.

Anyone who remembers the "Bear Affair" knows that Lakeland is the place to go for a good time. Our December meeting was held at the Karras home where 45 members gathered for a potluck supper, gift exchange and lots of fun and visiting. The January 15th meeting was held at the curling rink with curling, poker and, as usual, food. Our club members usually ride on Thursday for lunch, weather permitting. Sometimes these excursions are to restaurants but often our lunch is a cookout at one of the shelters. We often get together on Sunday for a club ride within our area.

On January 19th, our club and the local Fire Department once again co-sponsoring a snowmobile safety course for riders aged 12 to 15. The instructor was from Parkland Ambulances.

One of our members, Carol McKnight, rode in the Prairie Women on Snowmobiles ride, which raises money for breast cancer research. We are very proud of her personal commitment as well as her accomplishments. The riders were accompanied through our area by riders from our club. We can only say, "Way to go girls."

We wish to take this opportunity to publicly thank all our corporate sponsors for their continued support of our club. Your help is greatly appreciated.
We also wish to thank the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association for the work they do on our behalf.

Till next time, safe riding.
