On March 9, the Klondike Snowmobile Association (KSA) hosted a poker run to benefit the Yukon Hospital Foundation. Organized snowmobiling across North America is a great supporter of charitable organizations. Whereas many clubs support national charities, the KSA chose to support a local charity. All Yukoners benefit from the enhanced medical services made available through the fundraising efforts of the foundation.
Yukon Yamaha was our gracious host for the event. They gave us the run of the building for the day. Though the weather was hovering around 0°C, it was great to be inside and sheltered from the strong south wind during pre- and post-run. Yukon Yamaha assisted with removing the snow windrows along the shoulders of the highway, allowing a safe and easy crossing. They also donated one of the top prizes for the event. Hats off to Yukon Yamaha for their strong support of the KSA and this charity poker run.
The route was approximately 60 kilometres in length. It ran from Yukon Yamaha, south along the highway to the Crater Lake trail, over Mount McIntyre, across Fish Lake, through Jackson Lakes, back down the Copper Haul Road and the Crater Lake trail to Yukon Yamaha. Conditions were good although the trail was soft in spots due to the warm weather. Some of the riders lost the trail because the flagging was blown from the trees since we marked the route earlier in the week. Winds at the Fish Lake checkpoint were reported at 60 kilometres per hour at the time of the run. Anyone who looked lost was rounded up by the veterans and escorted through the Jackson Lake area to checkpoint #3. Other than one seized engine and one standoff with a tree, the run went smoothly.
Major prizes were awarded for the top five hands, then everyone who ran got called for door prizes and got their pick from the prize table. Nobody went home empty-handed. When the snowdust settled, we had $600 to donate to the Yukon Hospital Foundation.
This event could not have happened without the hard work of the dedicated board members and volunteers and the strong support from corporate donors. Thanks to everyone who made this year’s run a success.
