The Brokenhead Trailblazers are ready to hit the trails and meet new people
by L MALCOLM

A SMOOTH RIDE: The Brokenhead Trail Blazers club are hard at work grooming their trails.
Hello to all our snow toboggan enthusiasts. If the saying is true and we get comparable amounts of snow to the rain we’ve received this spring and summer, we’re in for some awesome trail riding this winter. Our club has 130 kilometres of scenic, groomed, marked, twinned trails through some natural habitat in our area. Our dedicated volunteers work very hard to maintain consistent standards for safety and enjoyment on the trail system, which does connect via our Eastern Region trails to the Can Am Trail.

Our club members are so proud to have had our Snoman nomination for Family of the Year chosen as this year’s Family of the Year. It is none other than the Prudens: Jim, our president and mechanic; Dawn a.k.a. Santa’s elf and receptionist for the many calls Jim receives; Nicole is the clubhouse groundskeeper; and Dylan is the mechanic’s helper.

We held our Christmas potluck at the Superior Inn in Beausejour this year. Santa Claus, complete with Dawn the elf, paid a visit to the children: gifts and goodies were distributed. The potluck was too wonderful for words; the variety of food prepared with such care was commendable and remarkable—we must have the best cooks around. Our summer windup was fairly well attended considering the threat of rain and monster mosquitoes. We are proud to have new horseshoe tournament winners from our summer windup held June 16 at the Brokenhead Trail Blazers’ clubhouse. Karen Sobetski and Bill Patterson—what a game, white-knuckle to the end. Supper was a traditional potluck: delicious home-prepared perogies, chicken, salads and desserts (it didn’t turn out to be all salads or desserts) accompanied by the usual fare of burgers and dogs.

Our first fundraiser for the year was held in Beausejour on August 26, 2007: a pancake breakfast in conjunction with the Shades of the Past Car Show. Breakfast/brunch was served from 8 a.m. until 12 noon. Our club, in return for allowing us to share the crowd, donated to the event to show our support to this community sponsor. We sure enjoyed seeing the crowd back from last year and added a few new faces to our club supporters.

We are hosting another fundraiser November 3, 2007: a Bud, Spud & Steak at the Oakbank Motor Hotel from 6 to 9 p.m., accompanied by a fabulous silent auction. Tickets are $15 and are available from any member or by calling one of the telephone numbers at the bottom of this article. We’re all looking forward to meeting the trail riders and supporters of our Snofund #4 North Trail, Tyndall, Beausejour North and South, Stead, Gull Lake to the South Beach Casino, so please come out and support our trail system endeavours and meet the volunteers who do the actual grooming, signing and maintenance of the trails and equipment.

Our general monthly meetings are held at the Brokenhead Trail Blazers’ clubhouse at 7:30 p.m. the first Friday of the month, commencing October 5, 2007, with the last annual meeting held April 4, 2008. We have committees to arrange events and rides for the season and these will be announced through our meeting minutes and on our website. We are a family-oriented club and always look forward to new members. Our club membership dues are $25 for couples or families and $20 for a single. We have an awesome Christmas potluck complete with Santa if he’s not too busy and a summer club windup with a horseshoe tournament.

We have an informative website at www.geocities.com/brokenheadtrailblazers—please check out the information/pictures. Our e-mail contact address is btb_webmaster@mts.net. We are so happy our executive is continuing to do an excellent job of guiding our club up the road of excellence, particularly being a club with a membership of 54, which includes the ladies.

Our executive is: Jim Pruden, president 785-8961; James Hnatowich, vice-president 757-7025; Barry Malcolm, secretary/treasurer 268-1001; Mel Darroch, Snoman representative 268-1913; with alternate Peter Skrepetz 667-9875, who is also the safety representative. Please contact any of these members if you have any questions about the trail or club functions.

We are looking forward to meeting you at our fundraiser, club meeting or on the trails this winter.
