KIMBERLEY
Welcome to the Old Bauernhaus
Kootenay Rockies Getaway includes dinner at this Kimberley landmark

A UNIQUE DINING EXPERIENCE: A warm and friendly atmosphere and excellent food guarantee a meal to remember in this one-of-a-kind Bavarian restaurant. Top left: Your hosts at The Old Bauernhaus: Michelle and Nils Fuhge.

Do you want a recipe for a dining experience you will never forget?

Take one centuries-old European log home, transplant it in the beautiful Kootenay Rockies community of Kimberley, add a warm, welcoming ambiance and delicious meals prepared with care, then throw in some great people for good measure. Let laughter and spirits rise over several hours. Voila!

A Haus with history
The Old Bauernhaus was first built in Southern Bavaria about 350 years ago. It sheltered servants of a nearby castle who had to cultivate a huge apple orchard. After the castle burned down, the farmhouse was owned by three different families, found use as a cider pub and even survived the Black Plague.

In 1756, the log building was restored and the stable part, a typical post-and-beam construction (Zierbundstadel), was added.

The present kitchen, washrooms and no-smoking section used to house pigs, several cows and the working horse. The chickens were caged underneath the benches in what is now the smoking area.

In 1987, owners Nils and Michelle Fuhge took the house apart and made necessary repairs. Two years later, the material was packed in two containers, and later that year the Fuhges started reconstructing the Bauernhaus in “The Bavarian City of the Rockies.”

But enough of that, let’s order!
