Known as the Bavarian city of the Rockies, Kimberley, B.C., boasts some of the most natural and scenic sledding the Kootenays have to offer. And thanks to Powder Hounds Snowmobile Tours, who have been asked to join the snowmobile club with the red paper clip guy on his tour to Yahk, everyone can enjoy this gem of the Kootenays.

Started in the winter of 2001, Powder Hounds Snowmobile Tours offers guests completely guided tours—with transportation, snowmobiles, snowsuits, helmets, goggles, boots, gloves and snacks included. According to Chris Plamondon, co-owner and operator of Powder Hounds, the company aims to give guests an ultimate winter getaway and works closely with the Kimberley resort and other providers in achieving this goal.

Plamondon feels that the area is just in the discovery stages and she is confident that good things are in store for all aspects of tourism, winter and summer.

“We are very happy to be a part of such a positive change that is happening in this area,” said Plamondon.

“We realized that there was a huge demand for other winter activities besides skiing,” she added, explaining why she and her husband Dan started the business.

Taking advantage of such a demand has paid off for Powder Hounds; Plamondon explained that they are well on their way this year, with bookings coming earlier and the demand being higher than in previous years.

However, as with most business ventures, there are obstacles to overcome, sometimes caused by natural forces.

“Obviously one of the challenges of owning and operating a snowmobile business would be the lack of cooperation from mother nature,” said Plamondon. “Last year was a struggle due to the shortage of snow in the area, which made for a very short season.”

Despite challenges, Plamondon feels that the area is just in the discovery stages and she is confident that good things are in store for all aspects of tourism, winter and summer.

Powder Hounds Snowmobile Tours has recently been asked to join Kyle MacDonald, the red paper clip guy, on his snowmobile tour to Yahk.

“Of course we feel very honoured and excited to be asked to be part of the red paper clip tour to Yahk,” Plamodon said. “I'm confident that Kyle will fall in love with this area as many others have and I look forward to being an ambassador for Kimberley and Cranbrook.”

Yes, one excellent way to enjoy the beauty of Kimberley and the surrounding areas is on a guided snowmobile tour, as Kyle MacDonald will soon find out.
