Stroumboulopoulos' snowmobiling adventure
"I wiped that bad boy out like you wouldn't believe."
By Jeff Cummings

CBC Newsworld’s George Stroumboulopoulos has done it all—interviewing rock stars, politicians and celebrities in just about every corner of the world, but did you know he has also snowmobiled?

After a live broadcast of CBC Newsworld’s The Hour in Yahk, B.C. on February 9, Stroumboulopoulos was asked by SnoRiders West if he has ever snowmobiled.

He said the only time he has ever snowmobiled was when he spent some time in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, which is along the shores of Cumberland Sound.

“Back then I thought it would be good idea to jump snowmobiles at high speeds, especially after never snowmobiling before,” said Stroumboulopoulos. “I wiped that bad boy like you wouldn’t believe because I suck at it—but it was a lot of fun.”

Stroumboulopoulos was in Yahk hosting The Hour live where Kyle MacDonald—the creator of www.oneredpaperclip.com—wrapped up a snowmobile trip with SnoRiders West after he ponied up a snowmobile with the magazine in exchange for a snowmobile trip to Yahk. MacDonald later traded that trip for a cube van and he made those trade official during the television show.

However, what brought The Hour to Yahk was an entirely different story altogether. During a previous airing of The Hour, Stroumboulopoulos asked MacDonald if there was a place that he would not make a trade.

“I wouldn’t go to Yahk, B.C.,” said MacDonald during the broadcast.

After saying that on national television, MacDonald announced on his website that Stroumboulopoulos hypnotized him into saying Yahk. The move started an online petition from Yahk residents to get CBC to air The Hour live from Yahk.

“This is a very real town in a very real country and that’s what makes this place so amazing,” said Stroumboulopoulos. “This is why we came here, but when you think about it, it doesn’t make much sense on paper. However, you actually have to take it off that paper and then put it in front of a camera and then you will realize why it makes perfect sense.”
