When David Kryschuk’s father, Roy, was a young boy, he rode one of the first power toboggans crafted by snowmobiling pioneer Mike Bosak.
“My dad remembers as a child—probably around 1950—getting a ride on a snowmobile,” said David. “When he was young, he always had a machine, and he liked to race…in oval track races.”
The love of snowmobiles has been ingrained in the family ever since.
Roy and his brothers, Raymond and John, were among the founding members of the Brokenhead Trail Blazers snowmobile club in Beausejour in 1970. Roy, who has remained active in the club ever since, also sat on the Snoman board as Eastern Region director from its inception until 2000. Roy’s wife, Pat, was always involved in club socials and functions. David’s recollections of his own childhood include many club events and outings.
“My earliest memories are probably being at the clubhouse and helping out with poker derbies,” said David. “Poker derbies were a big event where members pitched in and manned the checkpoints and operated the kitchen, and as soon as I was able to help out, I was there with everybody else.”
Now, David has stepped in to fill his father’s shoes as president of the snowmobile club; his wife, Chantelle, is the secretary-treasurer. Their four-year-old son, Matthew, is showing the same need for speed as his grandfather; Matthew is competing in the upcoming Canadian Power Toboggan Championship races in Beausejour in March. David said he and his father, now 65, still enjoy riding together.
“Dad’s retired now so he spends a lot of his time in the winter volunteering for the club and operating the groomer, cutting up wood and putting up signs,” said David, “whatever needs to be done.”
