How to replace jack shaft bearings

An important maintenance tip for Hus-Ski snowmobile owners

by BARRIE GRAHAM

IMPORTANT PIECES: The top item is a jack shaft from a model 444, which has two splined areas. The second item is an assembled Jack shaft and jackshaft housing for model 200, 200-A and 600. The bottom item is the jackshaft housing for all models, except the model 600 single track.

To be sure I help you with the right parts, I will refer to them by the name given in the parts manual.

The shaft at the front is called the jack shaft. It has the driven clutch/brake on one end and the chain sprocket on the other. The jack shaft is held by two bearings in the "jack shaft housing". To remove the jack shaft, first remove the bolt and washer, which holds the small sprocket in place. Pull off the sprocket and replace the bolt and washer. There is supposed to be another spacer behind the sprocket. Now, tap the end of the bolt to push the jackshaft out the other side. The far bearing should also come out. The bearing next to the sprocket will stay in place. Pull off the driven clutch and watch for the half round woodruff key to fall on the floor. Pull off the bearing. These are standard bearings and can be bought at any bearing shop. Remember to take the old one because the number is on its side rim.
